The Legend Began Here

The classic legend of the Man From Snowy River began right here in Tumbarumba Shire.

Jack Riley, lived at Tom Groggin and was a stockman of legendary skill in the Australian Alps.

Jack was the stockman whose whipcracks rang in the hills, and still ring in our imaginations today. It was his horse that sent the flint stones flying as man and beast chased the wild bush horses.

And it was at a campfire near Corryong that A B "Banjo" Paterson met Jack Riley and heard his story.

To this day, Corryong celebrates Jack Riley and the tradition of the mountain cattlemen with the annual Man From Snowy River Bush Festival (held on the first weekend in April each year).

You can see the skills of the mountain cattlemen displayed by genuine, 3rd generation mountain cattleman Tim O'Brien at the Boggy Creek Show. Check with the Park Office for session dates and times.

Welcome to the home of an Australian legend.
