The Mild Side of Wild
| Tumbarumba has had a colourful past and has touched the lives of many
Australia families since the mid-1800s. The area was first noticed when Hume &
Hovell travelled through on their expedition to find an inland route south.
Along the way they discovered the amazing aspect of the Snowy Mountains that is
on this, the inland, side. They discovered hills forested with Alpine Ash and Snow Gums. They discovered
rivers and streams that thunder over waterfalls and never dry up. They
discovered abundant wildlife and high country plains that would, in years to
come, become some of the best farming country in Australia.
Tumbarumba has been a gold town and a timber town; there have been many wild
days in the town's history. |
 |
Nowadays, Tumbarumba is a peaceful community surrounded by hills that roll up
into the Snowy Mountains - hills that are home to forests, farms, and some of
Australia's best cool-climate wineries.
 |
This is an artist's paradise, so bring you easel or your camera and capture
some spectacular scenery beautifully presented in crisp mountain air. And autumn
is alive with colour, bring your full palette. This is golfer's heaven with sand greens and grass greens, courses in the
mountains and courses that have the mighty Murray River as the largest water
trap in Australia. |
This is a Mecca for bush walkers with the Hume & Hovell Walking Track - day
trips, overnighters, or the full-blooded 21-day end-to-end adventure.
Mountain bikers are gone with the rising sun, exploring the forest trails of
the Bago State Forest.
Fishermen (and women) are up even earlier with rivers, streams and the dams
of the gigantic Snowy Mountain Scheme to tempt and tantalise.
And for those who want to celebrate their days of adventure and fun, we have
some of the countries best cool-climate wines grown and bottled right here in
Tumbarumba.
Come and explore Tumbarumba yourself, you may be surprised at what you will
discover.
